Ice

Ice

the cracks
are spreading
hastily across
darkened ice

on our streets
killing again,
another body
fly away,
good soul

a neighbor’s kindness
stacks a brick
still, this machine
gears greased
tears it down

on our streets
another body
on our streets
fly away,
pretty soul

a shop-owner
stacks a brick,
then another,
then a wall
a shield
together
formed

screams to be
the law
another body
on our streets
handcuffs
on our future

we are all
of this land
our lines
will not falter
this wall of love
hand to hand
a neighbor
a stranger
a friend
will not bend
